myna needs your help

as-salamu alaikum.
i'm still an advisor with MYNA, and i need some assistance. i'm sending you all this message, i don't know who among you is interested anymore. so, please reply if you care to find out more or help me in the effort in any way, even if it's just to give a simple suggestion.
MYNA...
the muslim youth of north america, will be going through a major reorganization and revival in the coming year, inshallah. we proposed, and the isna leadership has agreed to make some vital changes. do any of you have suggestions for people to serve on a new national board of directors along side the youth officers? i'm looking for scholars, activists, parents, leaders, anyone experienced or not - i
need some good names. ALSO, do you know of anyone willing to be a full-time PAID employee of MYNA, providing support for muslim youth activities? to help youth groups organize events, provide resources, build connections. again this is your opportunity to give me names. lets get some good people on the board and take myna in a better direction. i need your help. ASAP!
also...
i know we all have moved on. dedicated to different groups or schools of thought or whatever (myself included). some of us have our roots in muslim youth work....
well, its still going on and it could use your experience. my friend monem is an isna officer, he told me about an event coming up very soon. ISNA is having a winter conference and youth camp in orlando during the christmas break. they want me to help with the youth program and advertise both in miami.
now...
considering that i've heard several people say that they wanted "something for the youth" during the break anyways. well, isna is paying for it. they already have a great site. the folks at isna havn't given me many details yet, but i'll try to get them to allow us to make changes to the program. i need ideas. for speakers or topics or anything. please help. i know its short notice. they just called me,
i can't do this alone. if i don't get at least 5 volunteers from through-out florida, and 5 from south florida (from all the people i am sending this e-mail to), i'll tell them, sorry i can't help. we don't get many opportunities like this. please respond to my e-mail ---- or call me at ----
peace and love.

Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah, insha'allah all is well with you and your family...

In response to your email, i have the following 2 suggestions:

1) Regarding the paid position: my suggestion is to recruit some college student for it, and make it an official internship position with ISNA. Highschoolers are generally better in terms of need ( they need the community service hours) but college students are more mobile....if you "catch" them young enough, perhaps you'll find someone who hasn't already lost their drive, or been sucked into on-campus politics...dress this position up a bit so ppl can be proud to put it on their resume and have a good, official sounding job description. Advertise through ISNA for people who are looking to work with youth, are pursuing psych, or education, or anything that would really benefit from the skills this internship could feasibly offer them.

2) Regarding MYNA/advisory board/other: I don't have names to offer, but i do have a suggestion i had been considering talking to you about even before I received your mail. Perhaps it would be beneficial, and worthwhile, to invest in some one to actually go out and conduct a needs assessment of the muslim youth. What are their needs as perceived by THEM? What do THEY want in a national organization? What kind of a role do THEY envision this organization playing in their lives? What do THEY want to focus on? Maybe the majority of them dont really care about conferences and rereats... maybe its something else they want...what? i dont know...and neither will you until you ask.

Ofcourse, you'll understand that my perspective may be slightly off, given that i AM taking a community needs assessment class right now:) But whatever, its an idea, do with it what you will.

salaams, How are you doin? All is well here. I was thinkin maybe you could appoarch this idea to differant masjids/islamic schools, i am sure there are a lot of parents who want to get involved. Also parents might be more dedicating than any college student. I think a lot of parent would like to see a parent hold a strong postion in Myna as opposed to a college student. I rem. when i use to go to myna activities, a lot of times i got to go cause your mom was there, or Mukhar uncle or Nasima aunty were there. They also need younger people there because they can relate to them rather than anybody's mother or father. Basically i guess what i am trying to say is that there needs to be a balance. Whatever you need help in let me know, inshallah i will try my best to help out, its the least i can do.

one more thing... There should be some sort of rule where the parent has to get involved with the youth group. Its should'nt be like i drop my child off and pick them up two hours later. Some sorth of parent involvment needs to be present.

Salaams, How's it going? Hope all is well. I needed for you to forward me or send me everything and anything for starting up a MYNA group for my city up here! I really want the young people here to get motivated, they are so lazy :( Please give my salaam to your parents. Take care.
